About department

The Department of Experimental Biology brings together laboratories and teams that provide teaching and scientific training of students in experimentally oriented biological disciplines of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University at theundergraduate, master's and doctoral level. The main goal of the Department is to cultivate the best conditions for educational and scientific research activities.

Research

The Department of Experimental Biology investigates the processes and phenomena involved in the organization and functioning of living cells, tissues and organisms. Viral, microbial, plant, animal and human systems serve as model objects, which are studied using a wide range of approaches in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, proteomics, genetic and protein engineering, physiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, biophysics, etc. In addition, there are also teams at the Department that participate in the studies of certain genetic and infectious human diseases design to improve their diagnosis and therapy.

Teams with a similar teaching and research topics are grouped in the individual sections of Department. Their research focuses on molecular diagnostics and taxonomy of microorganisms, molecular cytogenetics, molecular biology of plants, tumor biology and genetics, molecular anthropology, environmental microbiology, microbial biotechnology, stress physiology of plants, cellular and molecular physiology of animals, and enzyme engineering. The wide range of methods used and the variety of object studied provide a solid basis for the scientific education of students and their good employment in the labor market.
