Christoph Winkler: Small fish, big questions
Professor Christoph Winkler from the National University of Singapore uses small fish models to investigate some very big questions in human biology. In his research, zebrafish and medaka help uncover mechanisms underlying diseases such as osteoporosis and spinal muscular atrophy. During his visit to Masaryk University, he gave a lecture as part of the INNOLEC series. During a very pleasant interview shortly before the lecture, we talked not only about what these tiny vertebrates can teach us about human disease, but also about the career decision that took him from Germany to Singapore, the research environment he found there, and what almost two decades in Southeast Asia have taught him about science and life abroad.
